Position Overview
We're seeking dependable, safety-focused individuals to join our on-call snow removal team for the 2025-2026 winter season. Using specialized routing technology, you'll service residential properties throughout Durham Region on an as-needed basis when snow accumulation triggers service calls.
Compensation & Benefits
$30/hour with 3-hour minimum guarantee per call-out
$0.72/km mileage allowance for all driving between sites
Work only when called during snow events (no guaranteed hours)
All equipment provided (shovels, salt)
Paid orientation and training
Requirements
Availability & Reliability:
Must respond within 1 hour of notification, 24/7, through April 30, 2026
Must arrive at depot within 1.5 hours of call-up
Winter weather is unpredictable - this position requires flexibility and commitment
Must be available to work nights, weekends and holidays
We track the weather closely. Whenever possible, you’ll be notified ahead of time that you should expect to be called for work
Vehicle & Insurance:
Reliable vehicle with winter tires in good condition
Valid Ontario driver's license and clean driving record
Adequate personal vehicle insurance
Technology:
Smartphone with data plan capable of running routing/photo apps
Comfort using mobile applications for navigation and service logging
Legal:
Legally eligible to work in Ontario
Physical Requirements:
Ability to safely operate snow shovels for extended periods
Comfortable working outdoors in winter conditions (cold, snow, ice)
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs (salt bags)
Standing, walking, and bending for duration of shifts
What a Typical Call-Out Looks Like
Notification: You receive a text/call when service is needed (sometimes with advance warning, sometimes immediate based on weather)
Report to Depot: Arrive within 1.5 hours to our staging location in Ajax
Clock In & Load: Use our app to clock in, load salt supplies into your vehicle, receive route briefing from supervisor
Service Route: Using our routing software, navigate to assigned properties (routes optimized to minimize drive time)
At Each Stop:
Review property-specific requirements in app
Take "before" photo
Clear driveway, walkway to front door, front porch, and municipal sidewalk within property line
Apply salt where indicated
Complete any additional services noted for that property
Take "after" photos and log completion in app
Finish & Go Home: After completing your last stop, clock out via app and head home - no need to return to depot unless specifically requested
Route Duration: Typically 3-8 hours depending on route size, snowfall amount, and conditions
Ideal Candidate
You're detail-oriented, reliable, and take pride in doing quality work. You understand that winter weather doesn't follow a 9-5 schedule. You're comfortable with technology and appreciate systematic processes. You can work independently once trained and communicate proactively if issues arise.
